Conde de Valdemar Reserva 2005 Rioja * Spain Nafl. 36.95
Rioja Reserva Conde from Valdemar is back again for the biggest wine lovers. It’s intense and spicy in its aroma, with a lot of fruit and a sweet vanilla taste. The wine has depth and concentration, spices, vanilla and cream. It’s a combination of strength and intensity, good juices and acids, which makes for a great experience. The tempranillo, a grape that is used a lot in Spain, forms the basis of almost every Rioja wine. (Rioja is a unique 120 kilometer wine region in the North of Spain.).
The wines are often aged on wood, which makes for very long lasting and magnificent wines. Generally, it’s the grapes that give a lot of color, the high alcohol level and the strong aroma. The tempranillo grape is usually used on this beautiful reserve, but a small 15% is supplemented with the unknown mazuelo grape.
Three new wines from Italy & Spain
A fresh, fruity wine is made from a typical Spanish grape like the gamacha. It has a magnificent light salmon pink color, a ripe cherry smell and a light vanilla aroma. It is a perfect wine for the terrace or on the beach, but also great in combination with seafood, summer salads and tapas. Delightful!
Terre Lontane Rosato 2009 from Calabria, southern Italy Nafl. 26.75
The smell of roses and plums, the sweet impression of cherries and just a hint of laurel. This strong and stylish wine is very suitable to combine with spicy dishes. We drank it with lambs meat and thyme, a wonderful combination of wine and spice. We have also combined it with Italian specialties like; Scaloppa di Fegato Grasso su Compote di Radicchio al Balsamico and Bon Bon di Prosciutto con Ricotta e Parmigiano. Santé!
Windspiel Grüner Veltliner, Niederöstereich 2009 Nafl 19.95
Windspiel Grüner Veltliner from Austria
Austria is known for strong wines from its native grapes. More than 36% of the plantations are grüner veltliner, a versatile white grape that can produce wines that are compared by experts to the expensive Bourgognes. Young winemaker Karl Fritsch experimented a lot with this grape, which is loved for its fresh and fruity character. Most of the 20 acres of land that are owned by this family company consists of this juicy and uncomplicated grape. The grapes come from all of the wine regions along the Danube, where the lighter grapes are selected for these wines. Fermentation takes place on stainless steel at a temperature of 19C, which allows the fruit to stay in the wine.
José Maria Vegas Allanz is the energetic winemaker from this big wine company. Here in central Spain it has become an art form to make fresh, elegant and white wines. The one grape vine that has profited the most of these technological advances in Spain is the Verdejo; stainless steel tanks with cooling, the use of nitrogen and the rapid processing of the grapes in the cellar. Soft and creamy, with a taste of tropical fruit and a hint of citrus. This wine is great for lunch and terrific for light salads, tapas and white fish.
